Shackford Head State Park is located in the very eastern portion of Maine, near the town of Eastport. Eastport happens to be the most eastern city in the United States, so this park is very much at the end of the continent and may seem as though you’re standing at the very end of the world.
This park is most famous for the incredible hiking it has, but you are more than free to take advantage of the park’s expansive coastlines. Shackford Head State Park has some of the most beautiful waterfront in the entire country, and if you were ever wondering what the sunrise looked like as it looks upon the continent of North America for the first time, Eastport is a great place to have that experience. One of the most enjoyable things to do at Shackford Head State Park is come to the beach before sunrise and then watch the sun rise up over the Atlantic Ocean. Combined with the incredible nature that surrounds the beaches and makes up the majority of the park, you’ll have plenty of beautiful things to catch your eye. It’s a New England experience that you will never forget! Shackford Head State Park is also beautiful during the sunset, as well, since you can watch the sun sinking past the tips of mountains and the roll of forest that surrounds the state park.
Shackford Head State Park is also a nesting site for bald eagles, which can make for an exciting experience if you happen to see one while in the bounds of the park. However, whether you are on the trail or sticking to the beach, remember to keep an eye out for signs. During eagle nesting season, there are certain trails and beaches that may be off limits so as not to disturb the nesting habits of the birds. Please be sure to obey these signs and do not enter the areas that are off limits during the nesting season.
Shackford Head State Park is a great place to go for those who want to spend a great day at the beach with their families in a beautiful surrounding. Be sure not to miss it.
