Natural Wonders & Parks
- Acadia National Park. This national park encompasses many of the smaller islands just off of the coast of the central coast of Maine. This park includes mountains, shoreline, woods, and lakes, and has over 47,000 acres worth of land to explore. Check out Cadillac Mountain, located on the eastern side of Mount Desert Island – it’s one of the first places that the sun hits the United States in the morning.
- Appalachian Trail. Main has an impressive 281 miles of trail, and also has the distinction of the most moose sightings as compared to anywhere else. The trail in Maine is also extremely challenging, even for hikers that are in the peak of shape – it contains a stretch of boulders at a place called Mahoosuc Notch, which is often called the trail’s “hardest mile!”
- Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge. This refuge contains 4,700 acres of wetland. Aroostook County is known for its potato and broccoli cultivation, so Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge is instrumental in keeping wildlife running strong in Maine. The main inhabitants are hares, otters, mink, fish, and beavers.
