Bangor is the third largest city in the state of Maine and also the major commercial and cultural center for eastern and northern Maine. The city itself also has a plethora of suburbs that surround it, most notably Orono, which is famous for having the University of Maine.

The Bangor Public Library is a great place to visit in order to get a feel for the town and to enjoy some pleasant architecture alongside your books. Bangor Public Library started as seven books in a footlocker, but now boasts over 6500 books, and has one of the highest circulation rates in the country. If you’ve got kids in tow, it’s a good idea to take them to the Maine Discovery Museum – this is a great way to teach kids in an interactive manner about local flora and fauna, which is especially good if you’re planning on going on outdoor expeditions during your time in Maine.

In the event that you enjoy the performing arts, you’ll find no shortage of venues in Bangor. The Bangor Symphony Orchestra is actually the oldest continually playing symphony orchestra in the entire country. There’s also the Bangor Band, which gives concerts in the city’s parks for free during the summer and is an excellent way to spend a balmy Maine afternoon. The Collins Center for the Arts, which is located at the nearby University of Maine, offers a variety of different acts that switch out on a weekly basis.

The close proximity of the University of Main affects the Bangor social scene – it’s definitely a lot younger and livelier than most of the rest of the state. You’ll enjoy strolling around Bangor on warm summer evenings – the town is alive with activity and youth.

Another great draw of this city is the architecture – as with many of Maine’s older cities, it comes with great 19th century style buildings that make the ambience of Bangor as nice as the attractions themselves! You’re sure to enjoy the time that you spend in this lively, cozy northern city. Whether it’s warm in the summer or a cold winter night, there’s always something to do in Bangor.
