Skowhegan Maine

Skowhegan is located in Somerset County, which places it in the central part of the state. The biggest draw to this part of the country is the fact that the Skowhegan State Fair is the oldest continuous state fair in the entire country, which pulls thousands of people in to join the festivities every year. In addition, the Skowhegan School of Art is internationally known due to the quality of its residency program for visual artists.

The Skowhegan State Fair occurs every August. Just like most other state fairs, it involves livestock competitions, rides, treats, games, and more. There is nothing quite like spending time at the Skowhegan State Fair during a warm summer day, and if you happen to be anywhere at all near the area of Skowhegan while the state fair is going on, you should make a concerted effort to go to the fair. You will enjoy it, and you’ll be able to participate in the longest running state fair in existence! Talk about living a piece of history. In this case, you’ll get to have your cake and eat it too – or if nothing else, you’ll get to eat funnel cake! Fairs are a great time, and if you happen to have kids in town this is a great place to take them.

The Skowhegan School of Art gives the whole area a bit of a bohemian feeling that is well encapsulated by the feel of downtown. Much of the downtown portion of Skowhegan is historic, and the artists that are in residence give it a unique feel that just can’t be duplicated elsewhere. Needless to say, if you happen to be in Skowhegan there are plenty of pieces of art up for sale. You might find merit in spending time at the local galleries and workshops and seeing what is up for sale and who is hot on the market at the moment. No matter what kind of art you like, you’ll be able to find some way of celebrating it at Skowhegan.

There are plenty of things to do in beautiful Skowhegan. From the fairs to the art, you won’t regret a single moment spent in the exiting little hamlet town.
