Mashpee is located in Barnstable County, which means that it can be found on the expanse of land known as Cape Cod. Thousands of people flick to this area of the country every year, particularly during the summer and the autumn. Cape Cod is a beautiful place to soak up the atmosphere of some of the best that New England has to offer. Mashpee is, of course, no exception.
However, what does make Mashpee unique is that it was one of the earliest attempts at a reservation for the Native Americans. For a long time, Mashpee was a semi-autonomous region for the Mashpee tribe, but the land was so rich in natural resources that it was eventually incorporated into the state anyway. What this means for visitors of today is that the culture that Mashpee offers is a little more unusual as compared to the rest of Cape Cod. Of course, you will find the beautiful architecture and the stately atmosphere of a New England resort town, but there is also a heavy emphasis on Native American culture in Mashpee. Not only will a visitor have the change to look at handmade items and learn a little more about the culture and history of the Mashpee Indians, but there is also an annual pow-wow held on the island as a way to commemorate what the area used to be. In addition to the shops and the cultural heritage, Mashpee is also home to the oldest Native American Church in the United States as well as a one-room schoolhouse. These are both attractions that should not be missed the next time that you happen to be in the area.
This is a great place to visit for those who want to spend some time learning about the history of the native tribes of New England while enjoying some of the best that Cape Cod has to offer. Ike many other tourist towns in the area, Mashpee boasts a number of places where you can shop or eat, and the shops are charming while the restaurants are delicious. Be sure to stop by on your next visit to the Cape – not only will you be able to soak up the beautiful nature and the New England atmosphere, you’ll get to learn something about Native American culture, as well.
