Plymouth
Plymouth holds a special place in the history of New England and of the country as a whole – Plymouth is occasionally referred to as “America’s Hometown” due to the fact that the original pilgrims who crossed the Atlantic on the Mayflower formed one of the first American colonies here in 1620. Several notable events have taken place in Plymouth, aside from its distinction of being the hometown of the pilgrims – notably, the first Thanksgiving feast occurred here, and it is also the location of Plymouth Rock. Unsurprisingly, Plymouth is a popular tourist spot during the Thanksgiving season.

Plymouth is actually the largest municipality in the state of Massachusetts by area. It’s located about forty miles south of Boston in an area of the state known as the South Shore, and makes a great one-day trip if you happen to be in or around the Boston area. Aside from being famous for its pilgrim heritage, this area of Massachusetts is renowned for thriving as a rope making city – it once contained the largest rope making company in the country. While there are still port elements to the town, no doubt that the biggest component of the city’s economy is tourism.

While you’re in Plymouth, be sure to get your fill of pilgrim lore. You should definitely check out the Pilgrim Hall Museum, which contains a lot of information about these intrepid souls as well as being the oldest continually operating museum in the United States. Another very popular attraction is, of course, the legendary Plymouth Rock. Plimoth Plantation is also a good place to spend time if you’d like to learn more about the time of the pilgrims – this is a living history museum with role-playing tour guides. If you’ve ever wished to see what a 17th century house would be like, this is your chance!

There are plenty of things to see and do in Plymouth. Come and enjoy some of the very earliest moments of recorded American history in Plymouth – if you happen to come during the Thanksgiving season, the atmosphere is festive and historic at the same time.
