Henniker New Hampshire

Henniker is located in Merrimack County, New Hampshire, which places it in the south central part of the state. This town has primarily been used for agriculture over the course of its history, due to the fact that the soil was fertile and easy to plow while the land was relatively flat. There has also been a history of mills on the bank of the Contoocook River, and a wool factory was the big business in town for decades. However, today all of the factories have been closed in an effort to protect the rivers and lakes in the area.

Today, the main draw to Henniker is tourism and education. The scenic beauty of the river attracts people form miles around, both to enjoy the views and to take advantage of the recreation opportunities that the river provides. In certain areas of the river you can swim or fish, and there are people who go boating in it as well. On a beautiful warm New England day, there is little better to do other than sit around the side of a river and enjoy all that is has to offer.

Henniker is also home to New England College, which is a four-year private liberal arts school that attracts scholars from across the country and around the globe. The feel that the students give to the town is unmistakable – there is always a youthful energy going through the downtown and the presence of so many students means that Henniker always has some form of event going on, no matter what time of year it is. Of course, the college is most active during the school year, and if you happen to be in Henniker during this period, it’s a good idea to check out what’s been going on at the college.

Whether you come for the incredible scenery or to check out one of the better colleges in the area, you will find something in Henniker to occupy your time quite pleasantly. Take a break, sit back, and watch the river go by. You’ll be glad that you took the time to do so!
