Barrington Rhode Island

Barrington is found on the center eastern side of the state, out in the Atlantic Ocean on a peninsula, slightly north of Aquidneck Island. As of the 2010 census the population was estimated to be at about 16,000 individuals. In 2005, it was also voted the sixth best place to live in the United States by Money Magazine, so rest assured that if you happen to stop by the town, you’re likely to find it quite charming and relaxing! It is also one of the more affluent suburbs of Providence – many of the city’s professors and executives work in Providence but live in Barrington.

Insofar as the history of the town is concerned, probably is most salient possession is the Barrington Brick Works. Established in the late 18th century along with the Industrial Revolution, Barrington Brick Works produced a lot of bricks that were used in construction programs around the country and around the world. Much of the town’s original population came to the area due to the Brick Works – only recently has Barrington become a home for the affluent individuals of Providence.

One of the biggest draws to the area is the Nayatt Point Lighthouse, which was built in 1856 and contains an 1828 keeper’s house. It’s one of the areas National Historic points and occupies a very aesthetically pleasing place on Barrington’s peninsula. Just because the area isn’t an island doesn’t mean that the lighthouses here are any less spectacular. Barrington is also a nice place to walk along the shores, as they tend to be less crowded than in more tourist-oriented parts of New England, so if you’re looking to enjoy some waterfront without groups of screaming children and the bustle of tourism, you’ll enjoy spending some time in Barrington.

The next time you happen to find yourself in the Providence area, it’s worth your time to come out and give Barrington a look. You’re likely to find it beautiful and relaxing, and a nice respite from the hustle and bustle of Providence. Come out and check out the historic sites that this suburb has to offer as well as the diversity and beauty in the architecture of the homes. It’s a great place to visit!
